On Wednesday afternoon, the Mayor of Kalavryta, Mr Athanasios Papadopoulos, met with the Minister of Health, Mr Adonis Georgiadis, following the public discussion that had taken place over the previous period concerning the possible abolition of the administrative autonomy of Kalavryta Hospital and its rumoured merger with the East Achaia General Hospital (Aigio).
During the meeting, the Mayor of Kalavryta presented to the Minister the reasons why such a prospect had understandably provoked strong reactions throughout the Municipality of Kalavryta. However, Mr Georgiadis immediately clarified that the circular sent to hospitals is in no way mandatory, and that it is entirely up to the hospitals themselves to decide whether they wish to proceed with a voluntary unification of their Operational Organisations.
"The new Operational Organisations do not imply any intention to abolish hospitals or departments," the Minister of Health stated to the Mayor of Kalavryta.
In a subsequent post on the social media platform X, Mr Georgiadis further emphasised:
"Because our circular regarding the new Hospital Operational Organisations states 'if you wish to unify departments, etc., within the new organisations of affiliated hospitals', the impression has been created that we intend to enforce mandatory unifications of organisations and departments. This is not the case. We encourage unification only where it is desired by the staff themselves. As we have explained, we will accept proposals submitted by the hospitals themselves, as forwarded to us through the Health Regions. The new Operational Organisations do not conceal any intention to abolish hospitals or departments."
